Preventing and Treating Gum Disease
At Starboard Dental, we understand that periodontal care is crucial to maintaining a healthy smile. While teeth are often the focus of dentistry, it’s important to remember that they are supported by soft tissues, such as gums and ligaments, as well as hard tissues like bone. Neglecting the health of these supporting structures may lead to serious problems, such as bad breath, gum recession, bone loss, or even tooth loss.
Prevention Is Key
Preventing periodontal disease starts with regular care. Regular cleanings are one of the most important ways to prevent periodontal diseases. Bacteria and food can dwell in the space between the teeth and gums, causing infection. We correct this with cleanings, or in some instances deep cleanings.

Scaling and Root Planing
If you’re already experiencing advanced periodontal disease, scaling and root planing, also called Periodontal Therapy, may be needed. This deep cleaning procedure involves numbing the area to allow for a comfortable, non-painful experience. Our providers will clean deep down into the pockets around the teeth, smoothing and planing the roots to prevent bacteria from adhering to the tooth. Laser treatment is also included to help kill any bacteria living there to allow for the best growth possible.
Our scaling and root planing appointments are focused by quadrant, with only the necessary areas being treated. A typical appointment lasts about an hour per quadrant, and we stagger appointments to assess the effectiveness of the therapy and healing of your gums after the previous appointment.
